Post-Sars attempt to restore faith in tech trade show circuit
Published: 1 October 2003 07:54 GMT
Hong Kong has today played host to a throng of PC enthusiasts attempting to set a record for the largest number of people assembling desktop computers in one sitting.
The attempt hopes to set a record for the Guinness World Records, according to a statement by Microsoft Hong Kong. This attempt will be the first in the category.
More than 1,000 participants with 300 volunteers are expected to take part today, said the statement.
The event has already been accepted by the Guinness World Records as a valid record attempt for the largest number of people performing PC do-it-yourself assembly in one setting.
Hong Kong is hoping for crowds to return to its tech trade shows after Sars (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) - the flu-like virus which spread across several Asian countries in April and May this year - caused dozens of deaths and slowing down local economies.
It also caused sharp decreases in tourism and consumer spending in mainland China and countries such as Taiwan and Singapore.
The stunt will be part of the Hong Kong Computer Festival 2003, organised by the island's district council working group and the chamber of Hong Kong computer industry, while Microsoft Hong Kong is the sponsor of the event.
