Microsoft is to add multimedia extensions to Windows 98.
DirectX 6.0 technology can be used to create graphics for games and active Web pages as well to play DVD.
Kim Akers, product manager for Windows 98, claimed the extensions are currently being tested on a number of beta users and, if successful, will be available by the end of the year. Akers said the enhancements are necessary as they were not finished in May when the operating system went into production.
