Seagate Software is to tackle competitors head on by offering its latest front-end online analytical processing tool for free.
The company said the decision to offer Worksheet was a direct response to the upcoming release of Microsoft's Decision Support Services, an Olap server code-named Plato. This is expected to be bundled with the SQL Server 7 database when it is released later this year.
Company officials claim the move is also designed to compete against Cognos' Aristotle - a data browser optimised to work with Plato. Worksheet will operate with Plato, IBM's DB2 Olap server and Essbase from Arbor.
