Vendors stay faithful to Windows 95

PC vendors are letting users vote with their feet on upgrades to Windows 98.

NEC has opted not to offer Windows 98 on its Versa LX and SX notebooks unless users specifically request it, while Acer revealed plans to offer dual boot-up of the two operating systems once the notebook version of Windows 98 is launched in the autumn.

Several other vendors, including Dell, Compaq and IBM, have blamed problems with upgrading drivers and Bios for the delays in offering Windows 98..

Dominic Webb, pre-sales consultant at Hewlett-Packard, said the company has no plans to offer both operating systems: "Historically, we've offered a choice of two in the form of a one-time selection. But once you've made that choice, there is no going back." But he added: "We're not ruling out offering both Windows 98 and 95."
