The BBC has awarded a PC supply and services contract for 18,000 users to systems integrator, Compel. The contract is worth £75m over the next three years, with the BBC retaining the option to extend it to seven years.
According to sources, Compel beat off stiff competition from services heavyweights such as Computacenter and GE Capital.
Neville Davis, Compel's chairman, said: "We were chosen because of our core competence in providing integrated, managed desktop services." One source said Compel will primarily provide Compaq hardware.
The BBC is currently undergoing a cost cutting exercise within its systems division. The corporation said it chose one company to provide all of its systems requirements after finding that working with a number of suppliers for each component proved more expensive.
