Apple racks up iMac sales - even before launch

Apple Computer is claiming it already has more than 150,000 orders for its iMac machine - due for release in the US this Saturday.

UK dealers are also optimistic even though the machine is not due to hit the streets here until 5 September. A spokesman for Apple UK refused to give any figures, but said bookings from resellers and dealers have been positive.

Ravi Virdi, finance director at MicroAnvika, said: "We have had a good response considering we have only just started our advertising. We are getting enquiries every day from new customers." But Virdi admitted the store had received only 20 definite orders.

The machine will retail for £999 in the UK. Apple also said yesterday that it had 460 new or upgraded software applications for the machine.
