Linux, the free Unix-based operating system (OS), received another vote of support today. Software AG said it will support it with porting middleware, which allows data within a Linux environment to be sent to a DCOM-based (Distributed Component Object Model), application.
The product, EntireX, is interoperable with a number of other OSs, including Solaris, OS390 and Open VMS.
Andy Joss, Componentware product manager at Software AG, revealed that the support was made on the request of Microsoft, DCOM's initiator. "Microsoft wanted it on the list when the product was developed, because it recognised Linux as a potential competitor. It wanted something that would help Linux users migrate to Windows," he said.
"Things have moved on since. We are seeing a lot of people using Linux, especially as a Web-serving platform and we have been observing a sharp increase in requests for Linux over the Net."
