Days before the the new Apple iMac is due for release in the UK, dealers are struggling to meet the demand. Although the machine is intended for the home market, volume buyers - especially in the education sector - are queuing up.

A spokesman for Apple UK said pre-orders had already exceeded all expectations, even though the iMac goes on sale in the UK from Saturday 5 September.

Brendan O'Sullivan, managing director at education vendor Xemplar, said: "We receive our first order today. It will be almost 1000 units. We have firm orders for a further 800 models."

He believed it would be the biggest selling Mac in education sector since the original in 1984. On the risk of shortages O'Sullivan said: "We are already short this month. In the medium term I am confident that production capacity will ramp up."

Apple refused to comment on precise figures prior to the launch but said it was pleased with pre-orders from dealers and distributors.
