Compaq is to team up with a German PC assembler in a move that could signal a change in its approach to Europe's home PC market.
Schaeffer-IT-Logistics will build Compaq's latest consumer PC - the Presario 5501 - which will go on sale for DM1,699. Components will bought on the spot market, rather than through more expensive long-term supply deals.
Despite being the world's largest PC maker, Compaq currently has only 2 per cent of the German consumer market, and 9 per cent of the European market. Its German PCs have to date been priced up to 30 per cent higher than those of locally-built rivals.
If the move is successful, the company says it expects to ally with local PC builders in other European countries.
