Microsoft has reportedly made an offer to buy the software behind 3Com's popular handheld PC, the PalmPilot.
According to US reports, Bill Gates made the offer to 3Com chairman, Eric Benhamou at a meeting in August, but was turned down by 3Com executives.
Gates is said to have offered to boost 3Com's Palm Computing hardware in return for its software - a market favourite compared to Microsoft's own Windows CE operating system.
Earlier this year Microsoft was forced to rename its PalmPC after 3Com filed a lawsuit in Germany alleging the name was too similar to that of the PalmPilot.
Neither company has commented on the rumours.
