Microsoft hit back yesterday at allegations of bullying and anti-competitive behaviour. The case, the company said, was groundless and that being a tough competitor was not proof of violation of antitrust laws.
Responding to charges by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) that Microsoft is a predatory monopolist, John Warren, chief defending barrister, said the government's case was "long on rhetoric and short on substance".
He claimed the government's attempts to demonise Bill Gates were "emblematic of this approach".
The defence argued that Microsoft had not acted illegally in trying to aggressively protect the market share held by its Windows-based Internet browser.
Following Warren's opening statement, Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale took the witness stand to fend off allegations that he goaded the DoJ into bringing charges against Microsoft. Barksdale's testimony is likely to last until Wednesday.
The trial is set to continue from six to eight weeks.
