Dell has joined the throng of vendors rushing to offer Linux by pre-installing the open source operating system (OS) on its workstations.
Red Hat Linux 5.2 can now be pre-configured on Dell Precision 410 and 610 workstations. However, users will have to pay a $20 fee to cover 90 days of technical support.
Buyers of the firm's PowerEdge 1300 and 2300 servers can also have Linux pre-installed, but support costs $75 and there is a $99 installation fee.
A Dell spokesman said the company has previously only offered Linux in bulk PC orders rather than with single purchases.
In recent weeks, support for the OS has grown as Compaq, Hewlett-Packard and IBM have agreed to ship it.
