Sema favours scalability of RiverSoft

By John Oates

Published: 7 September 1999 06:45 BST

Outsourcing group, Sema, has ditched network management software from Hewlett-Packard (HP) and opted for a product from UK start-up, RiverSoft.

Sema was using HP Openview to manage its customer networks, but after a three-month evaluation has switched to RiverSoft.

Sandy Lovatt, head of network services at Sema Group Europe, said: "We took a risk but the business benefit really sells itself. We can merge multiple networks which means savings of up to 60 per cent compared to OpenView. Network management is not just about managing connectivity, it's about knowing where the network is going, what the trends are and what needs to be done to keep standards up."

Lovatt assured that Sema checked the reliability of the product and "the credentials of the company" before making the switch.

The main advantage of the Open River product, according to Lovatt, was its scalability. Also, it doesn't require a new licence whenever a new network is added - just a new agent.

an interview with Philip Tee, chief executive at Riversoft discussing the strengths of OpenRiver 3, is available on Silicon.com's Client/Server Channel.
