Swedish social security migrates to NT

By Sarah Left

Sweden's social security department has dumped its OS/2 system in favour of Windows NT.

ICL won the multimillion pound contract to carry out the migration. The new system will support an electronic government initiative that gives pensioners online information about how to get the best return on their pension funds. Other benefits, such as sick pay and disability benefits, will also be dealt with by the NT system. As part of the contract, ICL and the Swedish social security department will evaluate new technologies like smartcards.

ICL claims this is the largest rollout of NT ever seen in Sweden, with 3,000 users already having migrated from the IBM operating system. By December 2000, 13,000 users will have moved to NT.
