Nortel and Sun/Netscape to offer ISP services

Nortel and the Sun/Netscape alliance are to join forces to directory-enable products that will allow ISPs to increase the number of services they offer to customers.

In a statement, the companies said they will jointly develop the products for ISPs and ASPs (application service providers) offering them more control over content and delivery.

John Morency, executive vice president of Sage Research said the deal is an "opportunity of crucial significance".

Under the terms of the deal, infrastructure software from the Sun-Netscape will be combined with policy services from Nortel to provide an integrated view of users across the network, service applications and back office systems.

The companies claimed they planned to offer the jointly defined directory schema as an open industry specification.
