Samsung plans $200 disposable PC

Samsung Electronics is planning to launch a disposable computer priced under $200, according to the latest US newswire reports.

Samsung is describing the PC as the "ultimate throwaway", with all its functions embedded on the processor.

The machine will be offered as a sealed unit preventing any upgrade of memory, processors or other components, and will be available in 2001.

Bob Eminian, vice president of marketing at Samsung Semiconductor, said due to the low price, the PC wouldn't need to be upgraded, merely replaced.

John Collins, senior analyst at Bloor Research, said: "What a cracking idea. It will be interesting to see what operating system Samsung goes with; by default it should be Linux."

Collins said the move is part of the overall convergence of laptop, PC, PDA and mobile phone technologies.
