Microsoft launches Windows 2000

Microsoft has launched three versions of its flagship operating system - Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server - to the expected fanfare.

At a London conference the software giant paraded users and partners such as Continental Airlines, Cisco, Dell and Toshiba to vouch for the improvements made in Windows 2000.

Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman and chief software architect, speaking via video link, said that since the launch of Windows 95 the Internet has put new demands on business operating systems.

He said an approach using Windows 2000-based servers "goes beyond what can be done with a single, expensive hardware box."

The company also touted Windows 2000's reliability, plug-and-play support, infrared file transfer and its Active Directory, which includes encryption technology.
