Cidera delivers Windows Media via satellite

Microsoft has signed an agreement with server software developer Cidera to enable Windows Media content to be delivered via satellite.

The software giant will use Cidera's proprietary technology to enable users who are streaming video with Windows Media, to distribute the content to any point of Internet access.

Cidera says that using satellites will solve the Microsoft traffic congestion problems of overburdened, traditional land-based Internet connections.

Dave Fester, director of marketing for the Digital Media Division at Microsoft, called the agreement a significant advance for digital media technology.

Cidera already has more than 230 downlinks installed at Internet service providers throughout North America and Europe.
