Real-time systems developer, TimeSys Corporation, has released a version of Linux that can support applications working in real-time.
TimeSys claims to have altered the basic kernel, or core of the OS, to provide reliable real-time performance.
Dr Raj Rajkumar, co-founder and chairman of TimeSys, said the development of the Linux code retains all the "hallmark characteristics" of the OS such as "reliability and stability" in the real-time environment.
The TimeSys Linux OS will be available for free from the TimeSys Web site, or on CD-ROM. The firm will make money on the product by offering a range of support, training and consulting services.
The product is aimed at applications in the telecommunications, process control, set-top box and Internet industries.
