Microsoft's latest operating system Windows 2000 has sold 500,000 copies since its launch on 17 February.
Microsoft launched the product amid a mass of publicity and press coverage and has affirmed that sales have been "significantly" higher than expected.
Keith White, director of marketing for Windows, said the half million copies - sold in retail outfits, not including the pre-installed figures - were predominantly the Windows 2000 Professional version for business desktops. He predicted that this uptake is largely divided between small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the computer enthusiasts.
According to US wires Microsoft is now planning the release of a 64-bit version of Win2000 to coincide with the release of Intel's forthcoming 64-bit Itanium chip.
