DirectWeb drops price of PC Web deal

DirectWeb, the company who hit the headlines in January when it announced a deal offering US customers three years of Internet access and a free PC for just $29.95 a month, is now offering the deal for just $24.95.

The 450MHz IBM Aptiva PC comes with Web access and a 15-inch monitor, and IBM On Call support. However, analysts are unsure if the offer will prove a long term success particularly since other similar schemes have already failed.

According to IDC's Roger Kay, larger companies like PeoplePC and AOL, who offer a $400 rebate on a PC in exchange for Internet subscription, are more likely to last in this market. "They are basically bundling eyeballs, and there is a question whether they will ever get the money back on the back end."

A spokesman for DirectWeb, Brian Czarny, declined to release sales figures.
