BindView unveils Windows 2000 migration tools

BindView, a supplier of IT risk management solutions introduced two new management and migration tools for Windows 2000 and Active Directory.

The company's bv-Control for Active Directory 1.0 tool provides security and configuration reporting capabilities to Active Directory. The reporting features for Active Directory will allow administrators to measure compliance to their security policies and find security inconsistencies.

The company also released bv-Admin for Windows 2000 Migration 3.5 - an Entevo product BindView is putting under its 'bv' umbrella. BindView recently completed its acquisition of rival Entevo. The tool will assist companies clean up and consolidate their NT domains for the move to Windows 2000.

Mark Perry, director Windows 2000 server product marketing at Microsoft, said BindView's bv-Control will provide Windows 2000 Active Directory customers with a complimentary solution for helping to secure proper system configurations. "BindView's bv-Admin for Migration will help our enterprise customers cost-effectively make the transition to Windows 2000," Perry said.

The tools additionally provide checks for execution to security configuration policies once the migration is completed. However, the company said the packages focus more on reporting than analysis but it will address this issue in the next release of the product.

Philip Mendoza, an analyst with International Data Corporation, explained: "These products are similar and you have to get to the details to find out what is best for any given enterprise." He added: "The good thing with BindView is that they have migration and strong reporting products that go hand-in-hand and can be managed from a single console. "
