Sun reports bumper quarter as revenues top $5bn

Sun Microsystems achieved unprecedented figures in its latest financial quarter, with revenues topping the $5bn mark for the first time.

Revenues for the fourth quarter stood at $5.017bn, up 42 per cent compared with the fourth fiscal quarter of 1999.

Net income was $659m, up 67 per cent compared with last year's figure of just over $395m.

For the full 2000 financial year, Sun reported revenues of $15.7bn, up 33 per cent over 1999. Net income was $1.7bn - up 49 per cent.

Scott McNealy, chief executive officer of Sun Microsystems, said in a statement: "At the end of the day, the numbers tell the story regarding customer acceptance of our products and services. In every important metric, including market share gains, we had an incredible quarter.
