Microsoft is ready to launch the next version of the Windows operating system, which it claims will power digital television sets.

Microsoft has sided with AT&T in a $5bn deal, furthering its bid to become one of the leading contenders in the world of interactive television.

This will precede the launch of its well-publicised Xbox, which will enter the games console market.
