The introduction of Bluetooth consumer devices by mobile manufacturers has been delayed dramatically beyond the original roll-out date of this summer.
Ericsson's launch of handsets featuring Bluetooth technology will not happen before early next year, according to Scandinavian newswires. The manufacturers blame the delay on standardisation issues and the high manufacturing cost of Bluetooth chips.
Ericsson hopes to bring out a PC card, two handsets and a portable PC, all featuring Bluetooth technology. The aim is to allow devices with different operating platforms to interact with one another.
Industry heavyweights Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba originally introduced the Bluetooth standard two-and-a-half years ago.
