AMD joins Intel in chopping chip prices

AMD has slashed the price of microprocessor chips just days after rival Intel cut its prices. The cost of the Athlon and Duron chips has been cut by 20 per cent to compete with the 19 per cent discount on Intel's Celeron processor.

The move is believed to be a warm up to the introduction of the 1.3GHz desktop version of Athlon, due for release at the CeBIT show to be held in Germany later this month.

On Monday, Intel cut its processor prices in a bid to ramp up sales of the recently released Pentium 4 processor. In addition to the price drop on the budget-conscious Celeron processor, Pentium 4 prices dropped four per cent and Pentium III dropped 11 per cent.
