Fission control: CERN opts for Java backbone

The European Nuclear Research Centre (CERN) in Geneva is to integrate its new particle accelerator process control systems with a Java-based messaging infrastructure.

The move is part of a four-year upgrade to the 27km-long accelerator, 100m below the city, combining the systems which monitor its superconductor and magnets.

The project will eventually scale up to a network of over 2,000 servers and 5,000 clients.

The software, provided by Progress Software subsidiary SonicMQ, is due to be live tested in the middle of this year.
