This season's iMac colours are... last year's

As expected, Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not unveil a redesigned iMac today but instead added faster processors and bigger hard drives - and, of course, a new colour scheme, which turns out to be the same as last year's.

The company has also decided to drop the much-derided Flower Power and Blue Dalmatian schemes and return to plain blue, white and grey enclosures.

Yesterday we invited you to suggest what the iMac's new theme would be. Although no one guessed correctly, we'll be sending Ainsley Charles Ward a silicon.com goodie bag for the following suggestion:

"I reckon the new colour will be a sly poke at BG and Microsoft - they'll call it 'Blue Screen'. Jobs will then go on to describe it as "too cool for words" and show all the world's assembled press how he has added a cup holder and velcro (so that fluffy toys don't slide down its aerodynamic back).

"Mind you, with the current 80s revival (have you heard the Erasure cover?!!) he could go for the minimalist look and produce it in matt white or 'White Out' - but perhaps he could have trouble with the trademarking on that one."

Apple also unveiled a re-vamped PowerMac professional range at the New York MacWorld Expo, with entry level machines running 733MHz G4 processors, a mid-range machine with a 867MHz chip, and a dual processor machine with two 800MHz processors.

Both the mid- and top-range machines will be shipped with Apple Superdrive - a CD- and DVD-writable drive.

The company reported profits of $61m for Q3, up from $40m in Q2, but down 70 per cent from $200m in the same period last year.
