Microsoft has delayed the Japanese launch of its much-trumpeted games console the Xbox by several months.

The company said the delay of the launch was set back to 22 February to allow it to focus on the release of the machine in US, which remains on target for an 8 November launch.

Japan is a crucial market for console makers. The company delayed the European launch of the Xbox earlier this month.

Microsoft is expected to spend $500m marketing the Xbox.

Last week, Nintendo delayed the launch its own next-generation console the GameCube by 10 days.
