This week's LinuxWorld event staged in San Francisco has been a rich source of gossip and speculation from Linux vendors and enthusiasts alike - with the industry also using the showcase to make announcements on future developments.

Canadian Linux vendor Corel is expected to sell the majority of its Linux division to a privately held start-up, according to Reuters. Xandros, a newly formed Linux vendor is expected to pay $2m for Corel's distribution division, which comprises 14 per cent of Corel's total business.

Motorola has chosen Linux vendor Lineo's Embedix operating system as the initial Linux OS for its interactive digital set-top terminals. Devices are expected to ship in the first quarter of 2002 according to Motorola.

IBM Research and Cryptographic Appliances has claimed to have demonstrated Linux running on the IBM 4758 secure cryptographic coprocessor. IBM said it is the first general purpose operating system running on a secure coprocessor. The processor itself is a PCI card which creates a secure environment allowing data processing and cryptography to be performed.

LinuxWorld finishes tomorrow.
