Intel has launched twelve new processors for portable computers squeezed into ultra-small packages using miniaturising technology.

The processors are made up of chips that are 0.13 microns, less than a thousandth of a millimetre across. These are the first portable processors to use the new technology.

The new chips range from the 733MHz Celeron that will sell for $75 to the $722 1.2GHz Pentium 3.

AMD also announced a faster version of its Duron chip in a bid to keep up with Intel.

AMD's new 1.1GHz Duron will wholesale at $103, exactly the same price as Intel's 1.1GHz Celeron.
