UPM-Kymmene, one of Finland's largest manufacturing companies, has bought Microsoft's XP OS for tens of thousands of workstations worldwide.

The company said it was due to upgrade to Windows 2000 but chose XP instead. The rollout is set to begin early next year, but the project is set to go on until the end of 2002. The company is moving to XP directly from the Windows NT 4.0 platform.

Jari Österberg, head of IT at UPM-Kymmene, told silicon.com the upgrade is part of the company's and Microsoft's three-year-long Enterprise Licence Agreement which was agreed earlier this summer:

"The decision was natural to us as XP has better features than Windows 2000. As we were due an upgrade anyhow, it made sense to go for the whole hog," he said.

UPM Kymmene has offices in over 170 countries with 33,000 employees.
