Sony Corporation has reported an increase in third quarter revenues and a 10 per cent boost to operating profit year-on-year.

The Japanese company reports its results in yen but benefited over the period from the rising strength of the US dollar. Post-11 September, the company reported more people in its biggest market stayed at home, with sales of audio-visual equipment and the PlayStation 2 console rising accordingly.

In fact, the company's worst performance came in semiconductors and PC peripherals where sales decreased slightly and operating profit fell 47 per cent.

Overall, Sony reported an operating profit rise of 9.6 per cent to Y158.6bn ($1.18bn) on sales of Y2.29tr ($17.0bn).

The games division posted a profit of Y66.4bn (£490m) compared to a loss of Y13.9bn for the year-ago period.
