Apple has demanded desktop theme website ThemeXP stops distributing two applications that mimic the appearance of Mac OSX's much lauded Aqua interface.

Desktop themes allow PC users to change the appearance of their computer's user interface.

ThemeXP confirmed to US newswires that Apple had requested it remove the "EclipseOSX v4.40" and "MacOSX Aqua 3.2" last week after the computer maker said they were in breach of copyright.

Apple has a track record of suing companies that ape the industrial design of its software and hardware.

It brought and won a number of lawsuits against PC manufacturers who copied the look and feel of its first iMac computer in 1999.
