Lindows previews Windows-friendly Linux

Trademark case still looming though...

Lindows.com has previewed an open source operating system with limited Windows compatibility, just days before it is set to do battle with Microsoft in a trademark infringement case.

While the Lindows software is unable to operate Microsoft Windows applications, the beta version previewed this week contains features that let users view and print Microsoft formats such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Lindows.com will still be required to provide the source code as demanded by Linux licensing rules, when it releases the official version later this year.

Both companies are due to hear a court ruling today which will determine whether Lindows can continue using the Lindows.com and Lindows Operating System trademarks.
