HP will cut 1,580 jobs in the UK as part of its 5,900 European job cull.
The company wants to save $3bn by 2004 following its merger with former rival Compaq.
Staff in Scotland will be particularly hard hit, with 650 jobs going in the so-called Silicon Glen. Of these, 450 are permanent employees. The remaining jobs will be lost in London and Reading.
After its merger with Compaq, the new HP said it would streamline the company by axing 15,000 jobs in total.
