Microsoft is to offer an online music service as part of the next upgrade to Windows Media Player.
The beta of version 9, is due to be released on 4 September and will offer a service backed by Sony and Vivendi Universal, according to reports on Cnet
Windows Media Player 9 will provide a 'Services' button which enables users to sign up for a trial subscription to PressPlay, Sony and Vivendi Universal's online music service.
The move is seen as an attempt to compete with rivals AOL Time Warner and RealNetworks.
