New alliance aims to take PCs to every home in the UK

Tech heavyweights BT, Intel and Microsoft have today announced they'll be partnering in a scheme to help the government make PC ownership affordable to everyone.
The government's Home Computing Initiatives aim to get computers into the homes of those who may have been put off by the price – while giving their employers a good deal into the bargain. Employees borrow a computer, typically with internet access, from their bosses – allowing them to take advantage of government tax exemptions – in return for a small amount being deducted from their salary.
The three alliance members have given money and resources to support the HCI schemes and will be promoting the initiative in the future.
Jeremy Gittins, Microsoft HCI Alliance director, told silicon.com that similar HCI schemes had been successful in Sweden and he expects the UK's to go the same way.
"It's a great way for companies to skill their workers," he said, adding that it is an "effective way to reach all consumers", especially those in households who might not have considered owning a PC before.
Guidelines on how to set up your own HCI scheme will be available from www.e-envoy.gov.uk in the New Year.
