21.04.1999: Microsoft CFO Greg Maffei has claimed that the PC market is "fundamentally healthy", despite reports to the contrary from computer manufacturers.
The claim came as he announced the company's results for the third quarter. The software giant enjoyed a 40 per cent jump in profits despite the problems suffered by many of its largest desktop partners, such as Compaq.
But Maffei remained cautious on future growth, saying in a statement "we remain guarded about growth in 1999, given the likelihood that organisations will lock down their systems infrastructures due to year 2000 concerns".
21.04.2004: From today's perspective, it looks like Gates and chums were right - only it took them five years to get there.
Manufacturers including Dell have been proudly showing off results that indicate that a hardware recovery could well be on the cards and the analysts have been backing them up, with PC shipments growing faster than expected in the first three months of the year. Both Gartner and IDC have put PC shipments for 2003 in the low 40 millions - and it's corporate purchases that are leading the way.
Things are also looking promising for the future. According to market research firm Context, the widening of the European Union will send PC shipments skywards.
