
Y2K threat gone, eco-nightmare still looming...

06.05.1999: The UK Environment Agency has warned of a possible environmental disaster if firms do not increase their efforts to beat the millennium bug.
The amount of waste released into rivers or the air is strictly controlled by computer systems. However, an Environment Agency survey of 400 companies found that 69 per cent of companies were rated as 'poorly prepared' for Y2K.
While 76 per cent have carried out checks of environmentally critical systems, only 57 per cent have performed risk assessments of affected systems.
06.05.2004: As the IT industry is painfully aware, the threat from Y2K turned out to be a damp squib compared to the disaster-movie style chaos that was predicted but unfortunately, IT's threat to the environment hasn't diminished accordingly.
Companies' fondness for dumping old equipment in landfill instead of recycling or reusing it has attracted the ire of the folks in Whitehall.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive comes into force in August this year and means that companies can't just bin their old kit and hope for the best.
