28.09.99: Dell Computer has claimed to be the first major PC company to sell a Pentium III-based commercial PC with a monitor for less than $1,000.
The system, called the OptiPlex GX110, starts at $999 and includes the new Intel 810e chipset, 64MB RAM, a 6.4GB hard disk and 10/100 networking capabilities.
By comparison, Compaq has released a PC with the same chipset and similar extras with a slightly larger monitor for $1,239.
28.09.04: PCs in the sub-$1,000 price range no longer make headlines - because they're so common.
Intense competition in the PC market has caused prices to drop and stay low. Even five years after Dell's announcement it's still quite possible to get a PC and monitor for less than a grand.
Having risen to the top of the heap in direct PC sales, Dell is expanding its horizons into low-end printers, storage and networking gear.
