I think the OLPC initiative is an excellent idea.

People keep commenting that food and water are a higher priority, but I believe they are just a different priority. Yes, where people need food and water this has to be addressed and there are organisations working on this.

I see the OLPC as being similar to the old saying. ‘Give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for life’

Today, for employment IT skills are becoming a requirement unless you want to always be working for pennies. With the OLPC program you are effectively teach children to fish which can only be good for their personal future prospects and also their country. Without IT literacy these children will always be held back in the world economy.

So, yes address basic now needs like food and water, but do not forget that for a nation and individuals to be self-sufficient they need to be able to fish for themselves.
