How can it be 'green' to retire CRTs early and send them to landfill? How about keeping them a bit longer and delaying the carbon footprint generated from manufacturing the replacement TFTs?
Application suppliers who cannot produce software that works on common platforms should probably be driven out of business - the main incompatibility with PCs is that newer applications become more memory hungry so adding more RAM usually cures the problem without having to send PCs to landfill - again this delays the carbon footprint.
