We used to build PCs to spec for local companies up until end of the last century. Software was always supplied to client requirements and all genuine product.
Warranty work was nearly always the result of tampering by client employies. We always inspected machines in the presence of our client IT managers and we found things like OS changed from NT to Windows 98 interface cables removed just to give a couple of extreme examples.
We kept build component serial numbers for each machine built - with concealed IDs as well as obvious ones per box. To be fair, our client IT managers were as much in dispair at the antics of their users as we were annoyed. This kind of work was charged for.
