The question, ‘How Green is my business?’ will be put to more and more CIOs and IT Directors by their Boards this year, particularly in the face of a global credit crisis.

Whilst ‘green’ has become the new black, particularly in the IT industry, the spiralling cost of energy and new legislative requirements mean that the case for reducing power consumption in the data centre is now more compelling than ever before.

Until recent years, electricity usage was not a major IT concern. In fact, the electricity costs for running and cooling computers generally was not even considered part of the IT budget.

Reducing the power used by using more efficient technology, whether in supporting plant infrastructure or in the IT itself, is a good way of saving money. Equally it is good for the environment as less fuel will be used and therefore less CO2 produced.
