European PC shipments fall for first time
There was always going to come a time...

Troubled PC vendors are set for further bad news today when a report is released revealing that shipments in western Europe have fallen for the first time.

Previous figures have shown a slowing growth, but for the first time the market has seen a decline in the actual numbers of PCs being shipped out for sale. Vendors had hoped European sales would continue to grow despite a slump in the US, but these latest figures have dashed their hopes. Gartner Dataquest has revealed that sales fell by four per cent in the second quarter of 2001 compared to the same quarter of 2000.

Figures in the US paint an even bleaker picture. Sales fell 7.1 per cent on the same quarter of 2000.

Only France and Italy bucked the downward trend with a growth in shipments of 7.8 per cent and 12.3 per cent respectively.
