The Scottish border region could lose up to 1,000 jobs as circuit board manufacturer, Viasystems, drastically scales down its production facilities.
The US company said it will wind down production at its Selkirk and Galashiels plants, citing a sluggish market. Viasystems said its UK business has also been stung by the strength of the pound.
Viasystems produces circuit boards and backplanes for computer, mainframe and telecoms manufacturers. The company's European president, RV Linn, said: "The timing of this move simply reflects the harsh reality of the marketplace."
Linn continued: "To best serve our customers under these highly competitive conditions, we are transferring production from these facilities to others in the region that are better equipped to cost-effectively meet their requirements."
