British prime minister, Tony Blair will visit the Fujitsu plant in County Durham following the announcement last week that 570 jobs are to be axed. The Newton Aycliffe factory is in Blair's home constituency of Sedgeflied.
Fujitsu said the chip plant will close by the end of the year and put the blame on the drop in demand for computer chips. Blair explained that this is a problem being faced by people all over the world.
Feeling the need to help the workers in the north-east, Peter Mandelson, secretary for Trade and Industry, has announced a £100m package aiming to bring in more work and investment in the area.
