Intel is expected to confirm today the name of its third generation multiprocessor chipset, codenamed Katmai. A source close to the company confirmed the name will be Pentium III - a move which will surprise few in the industry.

The 450MHz and 500MHz desktop Pentium III will be released at the end of February, while the high-end server version, called Pentium III Xeon, will be released later in the year.

The most notable upgrade for the chips will be their multimedia processing capabilities. Seventy instructions will be specifically aimed at speeding up graphics, communications and audio and video processing - it could even turn computers into digital video recorders, according to the source. The architecture has also been changed to support and enable the instruction set.

Joe D'Elia, Gartner Group analyst, said: "They are sticking to the same branding strategy to maintain continuity between the products."
