NatSemi scraps PC chip business

By Jon Bernstein

Published: 5 May 1999 18:05 BST

The microprocessor market has one less player today after National Semiconductor (NatSemi) pulled the plug on its PC processor business.

NatSemi said it was proving a financial burden and the company would now turn its full attention to the emerging information appliance market.

The company will take a one time charge of between $250 and $350m as a result of the move.

In a prepared statement NatSemi's CEO, Brian Halla, said: "We will immediately cease slugging it out in the PC processor market, which as been dragging down our financial performance for several quarters."

The move will result in 550 job losses.
